Job description
A Harbor Pilot is a highly skilled maritime professional responsible for safely navigating large commercial vessels in and out of ports, harbors, and restricted waterways. They board incoming ships from pilot boats, often via rope ladders in challenging conditions, taking temporary navigation control to prevent accidents, collisions, and environmental damage.
Salary
As a harbor pilot starting pay usually comes out to about 50,000-75,000 annually depending on the port you work at average salary is about 150,000-220,000. and max salary is around 400000+ but this is at places like the los angels port

A harbor pilot is a highly skilled maritime expert who boards incoming large vessels by climbing a latter thrown down by the ship and jumping onto it such as cargo ships and cruise liners—to guide them safely through congested, narrow, or shallow waterways into a port. They possess specialized knowledge of local tides, currents, and hazards, and often assist the captain with navigation and docking.
Requirements

- Sea Service: At least two years of experience as an officer (deck officer) on large vessels.
- Licensure: A minimum of a 2nd Mate Unlimited or Master 1,600-ton license is required, with many roles requiring an Unlimited Master Mariner’s License.
- First-Class Pilotage: A valid USCG First Class Pilot license for the specific port is often necessary.
- Physical & Mental Fitness: Candidates must pass comprehensive physical exams and remain drug/alcohol-free.
- Training & Examination:
- Apprenticeship: Prospective pilots typically work for years as deputy pilots (apprentices) to gain local knowledge.
- Exam Rigor: The licensing exam requires extensive knowledge of local channels, tides, and currents. Candidates often study for hundreds of hours and take the exam multiple times.
Where I want to live
I want to live in Savannah Georgia mostly because Savannahs port is one of the bigger ones in the country there my starting salary would be more than someplace like the Pensacola port. The cost of living there including food and tax plus insurance with a family you need to be above the 100k mark.
School options
I would need to go to a maritime academy to get my bachelor’s degree and a USCG Third Mate’s licensed the closest school to me is Maritime Institute of Technology in panama city.
